DIN SPEC 4864

The indentation method according to DIN SPEC 4864 offers decisive improvements in the field of material testing, so that a large number of steel, aluminium, nickel, titanium and copper materials can now be tested accurately and more extensively for mechanical properties comparable to the tensile test. It was developed in cooperation with the Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung (BAM, Berlin), the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB, Braunschweig), the Materialprüfungsamt NRW in Dortmund (MPA NRW) and several industrial partners.

An essential benefit of the indentation method according to DIN SPEC 4864 is the fast and cost-effective determination of mechanical properties. In this context, the indentation method can be compared with different hardness testing methods and the tensile test.

The DIN SPEC 4864 method is based on highly precise 3D measurements of test indentations and finite element simulations. The procedure is carried out fully automatically within seconds without the need for any specialist knowledge on the part of the user.

For in-house application of DIN SPEC 4864, compared to the execution of tensile tests, distinct material, machine and personnel costs can be avoided. Compared to the external execution by a test laboratory, long waiting times can be avoided. The indentation method can also be applied to small and thin components up to layers.

The aim of the DIN SPEC 4864 was on the one hand to provide the user with a simple, safe and precise alternative to the tensile test. In many cases, the non-destructive determination of the characteristic values offers an alternative to the tensile test with the corresponding advantages. Compared to conventional hardness testing, DIN SPEC 4864 provides a higher level of information and precision.
